As much as you’re doing online these days, isn’t it time to take protecting your computer seriously?  You are dependent on its performance like the lock on the front door of your house.  When you leave your home, you lock the door behind you, right?….unless you live in East Texas like some of my extended family.  That’s another story for another site.

It is important to make sure the computer you use to access your online ecommerce site is secure. Too often a site owner takes great care to ensure the security of the site itself and may fail to take precautions to protect his or her own computer.

If your website is not secure you may have difficulty accessing information, processing orders and securely accessing your own website.

Most netrepreneurs will place password protections on their ecommerce site to deter hackers, but interestingly a hacker might gain access to your information by another means altogether.

Personal Computer Security

Anti-virus software – There are thousands of viruses and mutations throughout the web. Some are implemented by visiting a website while others are downloaded through email. The use of anti-virus software is a good first step to securing your own personal computer. Make sure you set options that will allow you to gain updates at least once a day and be sure to scan your computer daily. In most cases this can be done automatically. Millions of files are corrupted and destroyed each year because of unprotected computers. Read more

Eliminate Adware and Spyware

Did you know that spyware slows your system down?  ELIMINATE IT HERE!

By Gary Gresham

Everyone should eliminate spyware and adware from your hard drive for your computer privacy protection.  Spyware and adware programs also slow down the speed of your computer by cluttering your hard drive with annoying programs.  Once you eliminate adware and spyware, your computer speed will improve immediately.

Spyware compromises the security of your personal information because the creators of these hidden programs can get access to your desktop even while you are offline.

Adware creates annoying pop ups while you use the Internet.  It can change your home page and even hijack certain pages to display their own messages, which are sometimes obscene.

One of the most effective ways to stop spyware and adware is the use of computer firewall protection.  These programs eliminate incoming spyware and adware that is attached to the legitimate data that you download when surfing the web.

Some computer firewall protection programs display the number of attempted ‘hacks’, which includes any illegitimate programs or data: spyware, adware, or other potentially harmful files such as viruses. Read more

EA has tossed in a piece of streaming adware. Now before we all grab our torches and pith forks, it’s not that typical type of adware we’ve all grown to hate.

This article is surprisingly good because it has some simple answers to basic computer woes.  You’ll want to take notes on this one.

Windows XP won’t load on my computer. What should I do?Ernest Kaufman, Los Angeles

If Windows XP (or 2000) refuses to start, press F8 right after you turn on your PC but before the Windows log-on appears (it may take a few attempts to get the timing right). At the resulting menu, select Last Known Good Configuration to restore your Registry to an earlier date.

If this doesn’t get your PC working, reboot and press F8 again, but this time select Safe Mode, and then choose Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore. Follow the wizard’s instructions and pick an appropriate backup.

If that approach doesn’t work either, or if you can’t even get to this menu, use your emergency boot floppy. If your hard drive’s boot sector or Windows’ basic boot files have been corrupted, this disk will circumvent the problem and boot you into Windows. If you don’t have an emergency boot floppy, you may be able to use one created on another PC running Windows XP or Windows 2000, but there’s no guarantee that it will boot your machine. Read more
